This was written for a conference on spirituality in aging.  I looked up the definition of “spirituality”: it is “the state or quality of being dedicated to God, religion, or spiritual things or values, especially as contrasted with material or temporal ones.”  Amen?

There are timings involved in becoming “spiritual” as we age.  We all grow differently, although most people, it can be said, make decisions about what path of spirituality they will follow when they are older.  Most people are trained up in a religion by their parents, and then, have to begin a search for what they truly believe as they come out of their teenage years and into their 20’s and 30’s.  God, we have found, unveils spiritual truth in a progressive fashion.  That is, He reveals that He is real when it is an individual’s time to be given the decision to believe in God for themselves, or not.  Martin got his revelation much earlier than I did.

There are many different beliefs residing in those of you reading this today.  Martin and I are Messianic Jews a/k/a born-again Christians.  No apologies. We are not into religion; we are into relationship with our Creator, His Son and His Spirit.  Everything we know comes from that truth that our Father, God, revealed to us as we grew older. 

For us, the decision of what to believe was not ours to make.  Martin was raised Catholic in San Jose, California.  God, Himself, got a hold of Martin at a very early age, and he felt there was more to a relationship with God than he was experiencing through a priest in the catholic church.  I was raised Reform Jewish, the most liberal of all the branches of Judaism, in St. Louis, Missouri.  God, Himself, in the form of Jesus, appeared to me at the age of 30. 

The timing in my life to come into revelation of spirituality was age 30, when Jesus/Yeshua appeared to me – see My Testimony.  That was because God needed to give me years of instruction in skills that He would be using in the call on my life.  He has given me enough time to become a skilled musician and had me raised up in traditional Judaism before choosing to reveal my Messiah to me at age 30.  Again, that was because once I had that awakening, I hit the ground running on getting to know the entire Godhead – and learning how to flow in spiritual gifts, working with the Holy Spirit to marry my skill in music to seer and healing giftings He gave me.  The call on my life is “miracles through music” and indeed, there are miraculous healings that God does when people listen to the music He gives me to play. 

I think there are a few things we can all agree on.  First, we are each a SPIRIT that has a SOUL (mind, intellect, emotions) and lives in a BODY.  We are triune beings.  We believe that we are made in God’s image as the Bible tells us in Genesis 1:26:  ²⁶And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

“Let us make man in OUR image….”.  Have you ever asked yourself, who is US and OUR?  Did you know that verse said that? 

Everything Martin and I believe has a foundation in the Word of God, including the fact that there is one God; He is real; and “He” is a Godhead – made up of 3 parts.  God is triune.  Father, Son, Holy Spirit.  We are not here to argue that, but simply to state that as being foundational to what we are about to teach you.

The second thing we can all agree on, if from no other experience than having lived on this planet, is that both good and evil exist.  There is God and there is the enemy – satan, the devil.  God created both good and evil, for His purposes in maturing humans.  There are 3 kinds of spirits:  1) God’s Spirit, who is the Holy Spirit; 2) a human being’s spirit and 3) demonic spirits.  There are two kingdoms that are fighting in this earthly plane for control:  God’s and Satan’s.

Now, having given you some foundational truths as revealed by God to us, and some of our testimony, it brings us to the subject at hand:  what exactly are the vibrations we call “music”?  Where do they come from?  How does God use music to heal people?  Because you happen to be reading this, we can state that it is time for you to hear a revelation concerning music and its power.  God has ordained this time in your life, and we pray that once you read this, you will approach, understand and react to music differently than you ever have before.  You will pay more attention to what is being played, who is playing it and you will be able to discern when music is being played under the influence of the Holy Spirit vs. satan.  Music is used by members of both kingdoms, so it is important to discern which side the music is emanating from, so you can make decisions about to listen to and what not to.

There are some basic definitions we must study in order to be able to discuss what music is, and there are a couple of ways to define music — either man’s way or God’s way. 

When it comes to man’s definition of music, I like this one:  Music is “an artistic form of auditory communication incorporating instrumental or vocal tones in a structured and continuous manner.” – from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music.

Where Does Music Come From?

When I asked the Lord what HIS definition of music was, He impressed upon me the following:

“MUSIC IS A SUBSTANCE THAT IS PART OF MY VERY BEING.”

Upon hearing that, my entire understanding of music changed.  I began to ponder certain scriptures to be able to grasp what He was saying.  I came to understand that music is not man-made.  I’m not talking about lyrics here; I’m talking only about MUSIC.  All music.  In order to understand this teaching, you readers must STOP and allow that statement from Jesus to truly soak your inner being, and you must remind yourselves often as you read this teaching, that I’m talking about the vibrations/sounds of the NOTES of MUSIC themselves; not the lyrics.

Since music is part of God’s very being, it is NOT a man-made tool. That’s why HE bypasses our minds and goes straight into our spirits & emotions when His vibrations we call “music” enter our ears and our bodies. Music changes DNA, awakens memories, heals diseases, brings an atmosphere of revelation, and it’s ultimate purpose is to allow us to express our worship of God and allow God to communicate to us.

When we discuss the single word “music,” most of us are discussing a broad topic that includes many scientific and mathematical terms.  Among those are:  sound, frequency, intervals, chords, resonance, wave, amplitude, tempo, notation, harmony, counterpoint, harmonics, melody and rhythm. 

This is the crux of what we are teaching today:  MUSIC IS A PART OF GOD’S BEING.  SAY IT AGAIN – EVERYONE REPEAT THAT:  MUSIC IS A PART OF GOD’S BEING.

It is a Holy substance.  That is why God heals through it.  HE is the healer, and music is part of Him.  He is supernatural – definition:  “of, pertaining to, or being above or beyond what is natural; unexplainable by natural law or phenomena.” Therefore, music can have supernatural properties and manifestations.

Man has misunderstood music and its power – has used it to glorify himself and has suffered greatly by misusing it.  Man has abused the power of music because man has not understood that music is part of God.  Once you know that, you will never hear music the same way again.

A Conversation I Had With God:

When the Lord began to teach me about music, I was praying about it one day and He dropped a nugget of revelation in my spirit.  I was pondering about the “types” of symbols that God gives in the Bible for the Holy Spirit.  God uses the symbols of wind, water and a dove – all to represent the Holy Spirit. So, as I was contemplating that, the Lord said to me (in my head), “Robyn, what do I use in your earthly plane to teach how the Holy Spirit functions?”  I answered, “Well, You use symbols from the Word, but I’ve also heard teachings about how electricity is a picture of the Holy Spirit.  I once heard a pastor teach about how electricity flows once someone has flicked on a switch.  Our acceptance of the Holy Spirit’s baptism is the switch.  Then, the flow starts within us, and the end result is a manifestation of light in a room, or gifts in us.”  God said, “Very good.  This is true.”  Then, He said to me, “What have I given you as a symbol of my Son?”  I answered, “The most obvious thing to me is the literal sun that warms our planet.”  Again, He said, “Right.”  He then went on to tell me that just as humans have a hard time looking at the sun with the naked eye, likewise, it would be difficult to see His Son, Yeshua, in the glorified state He is now in, with our human eyes, due to the brightness of His LIGHT-being, the Spirit-being that He now is. 

Then, God said, “So, what did I give man in your earthly realm so that He could understand about light and its power?”  Not being a rocket scientist, I answered that I didn’t know.  So, He told me – the electromagnetic spectrum.  I looked it up. 

So, Let’s Get Scientific for a few Minutes:

EMR has both electric and magnetic field components, which oscillate in phase perpendicular to each other and perpendicular to the direction of energy propagation.

Electromagnetic radiation is classified according to the frequency of its wave. In order of increasing frequency and decreasing wavelength, these are radio waves, microwaves, infrared radiation, visible light, ultraviolet radiation, X-rays and gamma rays.

WHOA, Nelly bell!!  That’s intense!  The thing that stuck out at me in this definition was the RADIO WAVES. So, I looked them up, too.

Radio waves are a type of electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths in the electromagnetic spectrum longer than infrared light. Like all other electromagnetic waves, they travel at the speed of light. Naturally-occurring radio waves are made by lightning, or by astronomical objects. Artificially-generated radio waves are used for fixed and mobile radio communication, broadcasting, radar and other navigation systems, satellite communication, computer networks and innumerable other applications. Different frequencies of radio waves have different propagation characteristics in the Earth’s atmosphere; long waves may cover a part of the Earth very consistently, shorter waves can reflect off the ionosphere and travel around the world, and much shorter wavelengths bend or reflect very little and travel on a line of sight.

There are many frequencies and waves that make up the electromagnetic spectrum, including the full range of light and colors that we humans see in our visible spectrum.  Without the electromagnetic spectrum, man could not have seen a rainbow in the sky.  But when I realized radio waves were part of the spectrum, it dawned on me WHY God made them a part of it.  Radio waves were created to carry sounds/vibrations, among other uses.  They are the waves upon which we electronically hear music.  It became clear to me that God was trying to emphasize that since He is LIGHT – according to 1 John 1:5: that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all – then, He is made up of vibrational waves Himself that form a spirit body.  He showed us in Genesis 1 that He created by “speaking,” and that His Spirit moved/hovered over the waters.  That hovering action is vibrational. 

God creates through vibration, through sound! 

So, if “God is light”, then light IS God, just as much as love IS God (1 John 4:8)!  And just as light in the electromagnetic spectrum encompasses radio waves, which sound can ride upon, then, God is demonstrating that both sound and light emanate from Him.  Sound is part of God’s being.  He gave us the electromagnetic spectrum as a picture of this concept.  This gift to us was for the purpose that we humans could view and hear certain waves without them harming us.  Sound is resident in His being, which the radio waves mirror.  When God spoke, “Let there be light,” in Genesis 1:3, there WAS light.  He didn’t move His arm to create light.  He spoke. The vibration of those sounds, coming from the mouth of God, CREATED something physical in our earthly plane. 

Are you grasping this?  God is love.  God is light.  God is sound.  ALL sound.  God is the Creator……and things we attribute to man’s creativity, actually originate with God, even if man is dead spiritually and doesn’t give Him the credit.  God has purpose for all sound, He even has purpose for silence.  It is my belief that ALL sound was given to us to worship Him, communicate with Him, and for Him to communicate back to us or through us, and through the instruments we play.  And some sounds are given to do war with satan’s kingdom, too!  Satan is NOT a creator.  He can mimic, he can attempt to influence, he can push us with temptations, he can whisper dastardly inspirations in our ears, but he cannot CREATE. It is up to us humans, and particularly those of us who belong to God through Christ, to refuse to follow satan’s leadings, and only yield to God’s.  That’s why it is critical to a normal Christian life to know the voice of our shepherd (John 10:4).  His voice not only leads, guides, corrects – it literally CREATES. 

Do you honestly believe that humans create out of their own mind’s abilities, without the inspiration coming from either God’s kingdom or satan’s?  There is ALWAYS a battle happening for our minds.  Our human spirits receive salvation when we accept Christ, but our intellects, will and emotions take a lifetime to bring under the total domination of the Holy Spirit. 

I can’t emphasize this enough.  Your understanding of what music is depends on understanding that sound IS God, it’s His creation, and therefore, there is NO music (the sound/vibrations we call music) that is of satan.  It is ALL God.

How Does Music Heal?

God heals through a combination of His compassion for you and His vibrations/sounds, some of which are released as music, going into your mind and body and overcoming evil mutations/diseased vibrations.  Even your DNA has vibrations and produces sound. Everything in the universe vibrates – even things that appear solid are actually vibrating.  Each human has their own sound!  God can instruct one of His believing “psalmists” to play in a certain fashion, key or instrumentation, that resonates YOUR body, YOUR mind, YOUR individual sound.  That’s how God used the shepherd boy, David, who later became King, to momentarily lift depression and oppression from King Saul in 1 Samuel 16:23:  And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took a harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.

God uses modern day musicians, who are believers in Him, in the same way – to overpower and overcome evil spirits oppressing humans.  But today, those humans can choose to become followers of the Lord themselves, in order to remain free, and not need constant “Davidic” therapy, as Saul did.

Music is a part of God that He allowed to exist in our earthly plane to accomplish a wide variety of things for His kingdom.  Music can and does bypass our soul levels (remember, we are triune and the soul is mind, intellect, emotions) and go straight into our spirits. 

Have you ever been in a movie theater, where sound is amplified so much more distinctly, and as you watch certain scenes you find yourself breaking down and crying?  Why?  Because the music is bypassing your mind and touching places in your inner being – your memories – your emotions.  Human bodies have “trigger points.” The music can bring up a memory and all of a sudden, you are vulnerable and open.  That’s the power of music to reveal and heal.  God can use the vehicle of music to reach into your inner being and point out a need – or break open a door in your heart that you had closed tightly because of past pain.  He can bring a healing release to you in those moments. 

Music scores allow us to feel the emotions that the actors are trying to convey MUCH MORE INTENTLY than if the scene had no music.  It’s important to realize that humans who compose music are handling a very powerful force, and when that composer is not plugged into God as His source, he can release sound that can manipulate you!  Be careful what you pay to hear!!  When you hear music, begin to ask:  what effect is that sound having on my mind and my body?  The only “spirit” that we are to be completely sold out to is the Holy Spirit, and if music doesn’t uplift you, bring you peace, bring you healing, draw you to God, then it’s coming from a composer that is part of the other kingdom. 

Have you ever thought about the fact that sound is measured on earth in “Hz” (HURTS = IT’S A PUN!).  Sound used wrongly CAN HURT; sound frequencies can either heal (when sound/music is used for God’s kingdom purposes) or it can wound/deafen/cause nervous disorders/even kill.  Remember, there are two kingdoms.  Music, the substance, is like money in that music itself is not evil.  Money is not evil.  It just exists.  It’s the LOVE OF MONEY that is the root of all evil (1 Timothy 6:10).  It’s what you do with the money – your heart intent that determines if it will hurt your life or bless it.

It is the same way with music.  When humans take and play music apart from God’s purposes for it, it can hurt the person playing the music, and more importantly, the audience or innocent bystanders.  Loud decibels can make people deaf!

When God SPEAKS/MAKES SOUND WITH HIS HUGE VOICE/RELEASES VIBRATION, or has one of His believing musicians release musical sound waves, He rides those waves and He CREATES!  He can even create new healthy cells, He vanquishes disease – overpowering evil with good, and we know music can be the vehicle through which God gives creative miracles – sight to the blind; hearing to the deaf; new limbs – can’t limit God!

We need to remember that God is WAY bigger than just our western scale of music.  Since everything vibrates, the planets and stars make “music.”  That’s why the Book of Job 38:7 talks about a time when the morning stars sang together.  Music is bombarding us in multiple dimensions all the time.  We just don’t recognize certain sounds as “music.”  Think about God speaking – can you imagine what that may have sounded like?  Talk about a HUGE sound!!!  It may have sounded metallic in the heavens…but if He creates that way, then we, being in His image, do likewise.  We release healing through both music and sung vibrations. 

The Key of Heart Intent in Music

When music is released through the hands and heart of a person who has a relationship with the living God, that music has the healing power of God resident in it.

Music is all about HIM – JESUS, and not the musician.  I physically put my hand on the keyboard, but it is HIM who IS the healer, the source.  It is up to me to develop my relationship with God/Jesus and learn to hear Him as I play.  What the world calls “gut intuition,” we recognize as the voice of the Holy Spirit.  When I play spontaneously, I seek God’s heart of compassion for the person or group in front of me.  I release music in the instrumentation and key that He impresses in my mind to use.  That’s the key of miracles and healings – the musician’s relationship with the Lord and their ability to play skillfully – married together.  I go into this much more in my teaching called, “The Open Door,” which is available on the Store page.

Why is music played by certain people effective in healing when music played by others only entertains?  The answer lies in the heart intent of the musician releasing the music. 

Let’s reiterate:  music is part of God’s being.  It is HOLY…it is NOT evil.  It just IS.  The negative results of music come from its playing by a musician not in relationship with the Holy Spirit; possibly under the influence of a demonic spirit – someone that wrote a piece of music just to show how great a musician he or she is; or sometimes with even worse intent:  to knowingly manipulate peoples’ emotions and WILLS to get them into a place where they are easily controlled by people with bad intentions.

What is the importance of releasing the “heart intent of God” in music?  It is CRITICAL to fulfilling God’s purposes for music on this earth, some of which are:  to worship Him and to bring into physical manifestation miracles and healings, and deliverance from oppression.

How can you discern the difference?  Pay attention to how music effects you.  If it makes you angry, nervous, or hurts your ears – turn it off!!!

In Conclusion

We must start to view music from God’s eternal perspective.  Even though music is constructed in measures of time, to God, it is an eternal flow.  It has always existed.  It was given to man from the imagination of God.  Humans are created “in His image,” and so is music within the analogy that we were formed in the imagination of God. 

According to Ephesians 1:4, we existed “in Christ” before the foundation of the world.  At various times, God created the egg and the sperm in our parents that joined to form our earthly body.  But He knew us BEFORE He put us in our mother’s womb (Psalm 139:13-16).  There is a difference between the time in which something is created in God’s imagination and when it manifests in our physical realm.  Music is like that, too.  It sits unclaimed in God’s imagination.  When it is time for a musician to compose it, it is loosed into the physical realm, carried by the Holy Spirit, and the musician actually physically composes it.

We think it comes from our brains because all of a sudden, in a flash, the knowledge of what to write, what to play descends upon us, or rises up within us, without us being aware of the distance that that composition has traveled “in the twinkling of an eye” to reach us.  It has come from God Himself, from the realm in which He, the Spirit-being lives — where heaven is.  God is multi-dimensional. 

I could talk for hours about how I was trained by the Holy Spirit to flow in music that heals, but I am going to conclude with a suggestion that you go to the Healing page and listen to the Healing music track at the top of the page. It should start playing when you go to the page. All you have to do is sit back, and receive the music into your inner being as if you were getting a shot of penicillin.  This all works by FAITH!!  Listen for His heart and His words to your hearts through the music.  There is no right or wrong interpretation – you will hear what YOU need to hear! 

Relax and know that His intent is to draw you to Himself, to heal you and deliver you from pain of all types.
